Prioritising Mental Health in the Creative Industry
Our commitment at Catch A Fire is to priortise menatal health and wellbeing for all our people.
In the high-energy world of agency work, at Catch A Fire we know creativity thrives when mental health is prioritised.
Sometimes that’s easier said than done when you’re in the thick of a big project, or deadlines loom.
Nevertheless, we recognise the importance of creating the conditions for the best creative work to happen – and we’re always working to make that more of a reality.
This #MentalHealthAwarenessDay the theme is ‘It’s time to prioritise Mental Health in the workplace’ and we’re shining a light on how the creative industry can do better by taking care of the minds behind the magic. Did you know, in England, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year?
We understand that the best work happens when our team feels balanced, supported, and mentally healthy. Mental health isn’t a side consideration—it’s integral to how we thrive as an agency and as individuals. A report from The Mental Health Foundation found that employees who prioritise mental well-being at work are 31% more productive.
The Reality of Mental Health Burnout in Creative Industries
Creativity is personal. It’s not just about delivering results, it’s about investing your mental and emotional energy into the work. And while that can be rewarding, it can also be draining. According to a survey by The World Health Organization (WHO), burnout has officially been classified as an “occupational phenomenon,” affecting millions of workers globally. A study showed that 44% of workers in creative roles reported feeling overwhelmed due to work-related stress due to the constant need to perform. This is where prioritizing mental health becomes critical—not just as a reactive measure, but as a proactive one.
So how can we ensure that creativity flourishes without sacrificing well-being? Here’s how we are making mental health a daily priority:
1. Set Clear Boundaries Between Work and Life
The line between work and personal life can blur easily, especially in fast-paced environments. Flexibility at work is more than a benefit, it’s a necessity for a sustainable workflow. We want to encourage our team to set clear boundaries and give themselves permission to disconnect. A well-rested team is a more creative and productive one.
2. Open Up the Conversation Around Mental Health
Too often, stress and struggles are hidden away in the name of professionalism. At Catch A Fire, we know that a supportive work environment requires open dialogue. Our Mental Health First Aiders, regular check-ins, and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) are in place to ensure that no one feels alone. Talking about mental health is not just okay—it’s essential.
3. Integrate Mindfulness into the Creative Process
Creativity requires focus, but it also needs space. The stress of constant deadlines and multitasking can lead to tunnel vision and stifle innovative thinking. Well-being doesn’t come from grand gestures—it’s the small, daily actions that add up. That’s why we encourage our team to take small but meaningful breaks throughout the day—whether it’s stepping outside, taking a lunchtime walk, or simply hitting pause for a few deep breaths. These small moments of mindfulness help maintain balance, reduce stress, and keep creativity flowing freely.
A Sustainable Future for Creative Work
The creative industry is built on the brilliant minds of the people within it. But to keep those minds sharp and inspired, we must prioritize mental health as a core part of how we work, not just on days like Mental Health Awareness Day, but every day. We’re committed to ensuring our team has the tools, support, and space they need to maintain balance—because creativity can’t thrive without a healthy mind.
As we celebrate #MentalHealthAwarenessDay, let’s continue the conversation and prioritise the wellbeing of everyone in our industry.
